Watercolor Bird's Eye View

Happy Monday evening! I have a fun card for the color challenge this week at Splitcoaststampers. I love the bright fun colors Barbara gave us.

I've been wanting to use this bird for quite some time and I'm glad I got a chance to this week. These colors really work well as watercolor. The Shaded Spruce became very blue when combined with mostly water in the background. And the Berry Burst could easily be tamed down to a light pink with more water.

I dug up this old DSP; it took me awhile. I had small samples in a notebook I keep of patterned paper. But trying to find the actual paper was a whole other adventure!

I used my label maker for the sentiment. A few years ago I realized that using black tape in my label maker mimics white embossing but is cleaner and faster. A bit more restrictive in what can be done, but worth the trade off.

I also entered  this in the Triple B - Birds, Butterflies & Blooms Challenge.

The Spring Mini Catalog from Stampin' Up! is now out and Sale-A-Bration is going on through the end of February. With Sale-A-Bration you can earn FREE Sale-A-Bration products with every $50* you spend! If you spend $100 you will earn TWO free-with-$50 products or one free-with-$100 product!

Tuesday Sketch Challenge

Michal has a great CAS sketch for us this week at CAS Colours & Sketches. It went so fast I made two cards that show the versatility of the sketch. They look totally different.

This is the card I submitted for the DT. It really did not take long - somewhere between 5-10 minutes. I did have to make it twice because I learned something key in putting this together - glue your strips on before stamping the sentiment. It's a WHOLE lot easier to center the sentiment between the strips than it is to try and get the strips centered above and below the sentiment and be equidistant from the top and bottom of the card. I also used strips longer than the card and trimmed them once glued down. I'm sure we've all had pieces we thought we cut the same size but were that millimeter off from the card front; this prevents that from happening.

The second card (which I actually made first) uses the dies from Darling Details. I love this edge die! Unfortunately I had very few current 1/4" ribbons that fit through the edge so I used this Petal Pink ribbon. While the card is pretty I feel it would be better with a floral rather than solid background but that would take it out of being CAS. So I left it as is and will insert a different paper later.

The sentiment set I used is from the Annual Catalog and is called Biggest Wish. It comes with Thanks, Birthday, Happy, Hello and Friend in both the big, bold font and the script font so you can mix and match. The more I play with this set and the sketch the more I like both. The striped card can go to anyone while the pink card is feminine. I can see that by just changing the paper and colors you can get a totally different look!

Sneak Peek and De-Stash Give Away

I have a sneak peek of an online exclusive coming to Stampin' Up! March 5. There are a LOT of new products that will be available and this Latte Love is one of them. If you are a coffee lover this product suite is a must have.

I was looking at some challenges and when I saw this week's Color Throwdown and Freshly Made Sketches I knew what I wanted to make!

The sketch of course made this super easy, it was just a matter of picking out colors and papers. The DSP is from the product Suite as are the ribbon and enamel dots. The only things on the card not in the suite are the Real Red and Pecan Pie cardstock (I don't have Kraft), the ink and embossing powder.

Although this Suite is not yet available there are plenty of great products in the new Spring Mini Catalog! I urge you to check it out.

Sale-A-Bration is also going on through the end of February. With Sale-A-Bration you can earn FREE Sale-A-Bration products with every $50* you spend! If you spend $100 you will earn TWO free-with-$50 products or one free-with-$100 product!

AND I am having my own personal de-stash giveaway! I am cleaning out years of stamps, dies and DSP! Little Dreamers Baby Card

I'm going to a baby shower this weekend for my niece and wanted a special card for her little one. She knows she's having a girl which made it nice when choosing colors and a gift!

This set, Little Dreamers, is especially adorable if you like cute animals. I happen to love them and love coloring them so it really appeals to me!

I used a combo of Stampin' Blends and Copic markers to color the elephant. I find that sometimes the Blends don't have light enough colors for me so I need to add the Copics.

I'm entering this in The Paper Players color challenge PP676 - Bubble Bath, Berry Burst, Smoky Slate and White. All perfect for a sweet baby card!

I punched out a few hearts using the Country Bouquet punch to add to the "love" theme. I tried using a Berry Burst Glimmer paper for some of the punched hearts but they seemed a bit over the top for a baby card. While I often like to add a little sparkle, for some reason I decided it wasn't the right thing for THIS particular card.

Something I like to do, especially when I'm not mailing the card, is stamping an envelope. It doesn't take long and adds a lot. I usually use the image and stamp it only partially on the corner of the envelope. Here I added a few hearts from the Country Bouquet stamp set.

Challenges entered:

Throwback Thursday - Everybunny

Today's card uses one of my favorite Easter sets - Everybunny from Stampin' Up! I didn't have it in mind when I created the board for this week's Tic Tac Toe Challenge but I enjoyed pulling it our for another go.

Although I know I should be using current stamps and dies available at Stampin' Up! I just can't all the time. For multiple reasons, including there are sets that I have that I love and won't part with. And I'm sure most of you also have older sets that you love. It's always great to get them out to use one more time.

Holiday sets in particular are like this for me. There are only so many themes for most holidays so I tend to keep the ones I love and get rid of the rest (which I  am doing with my de-stash give-away!) This set will not be going anywhere - sorry.

Occasionally, I will be pulling out some older sets to show you how to add new life to them. Sometimes all it takes is a new layout or patterned paper or embossing folder or sentiment. This card would have been better served with a new sentiment - I find the script font a little dated - but I did not have a current Easter sentiment that fit. All in all, I don't think it looks too dated with the embossing folder in the background. Embossed backgrounds seem to be everywhere now. And when I say "old" I mean something that is more than five years old. This set is from the 2011-2012 catalog. Things change in the paper crafting world but not that fast!

My advice - don't use a 10 year old stamp, 10 year old patterned paper, 10 year old color combos, 10 year old layouts at the same time. Pick one and update the rest. Your 10 year old whatever will look totally updated! See this post where I used an even older stamp (from 1996) and updated it.

Wedding Card

Happy Tuesday! I have a wedding card I made a couple of weeks ago but couldn't post before the wedding. It just didn't seem right in case the bride saw it before I gave it to the happy couple.

This card uses products from the new Forever Lover Suite from Stampin' Up! I'm not big on buying wedding sets (unless they can be used for other things) or baby sets. Until now. As happens with life you go through stages. Thirty-five years ago weddings and babies were all I knew. Then they stopped. Now, it's those babies having weddings and babies!

This card is for one of my dearest friend's daughter. The daughter is even named after me - her middle name is my name! So I had to make her a special card.

I started with one of the foiled cards from the Suite. They are beautiful! I layered a piece of vellum cut wit the Deckled Rectangle die but you could just cut a rectangle. I love the rough edge but in this case it may not have added that much. I used Gold Foil to cut the center outline and - this is key - use self adhesive backing on the foil or you will have a hard time gluing it down without the glue messing up your foil.

The inlay is not difficult. I just cut the same piece again and filled in the gaps like a puzzle. Using the Take Your Pick tool putty end makes it super easy to pick up pieces and lay them down. I put a small dot of glue in the hole where the piece fit and pretty soon it was finished.

I used Mint Macaron, a retired color, for the insert and sentiment. There are two types of card where I will use retired colors because close isn't good enough - wedding and graduation. A bride has her colors and schools have theirs! And you don't mess with either - LOL!

The Spring Mini Catalog is now out and Sale-A-Bration is going on through the end of February. With Sale-A-Bration you can earn FREE Sale-A-Bration products with every $50* you spend! Purchase the Forever Love Suite and you will qualify for a FREE product. If you spend $100 you will earn TWO free-with-$50 products or one free-with-$100 product!

For every $50* you spend with me I will send you a retired stamp set or die set from my stash ($100 earns a bundle while available!) Some of my sets are lightly used, but many are brand new! Spend at least $200 and I will also include some retired DSP. This is while supplies last so act now!

Painted Lavender Again

I have another card featuring the Perennial Lavender Suite. This one is for Mary's color challenge at Splitcoaststampers this week.  She changed up the colors a bit - Garden Green, Real Red, Gorgeous Grape with Anything Goes for dessert. I added Highland Heather.

I had to be careful not to use DSP that had other colors in it. The green in the DSP is different but since I used ones that had very little green I think it's okay.

I cut out several of the "postage stamps" from the DSP and just played with them until I found a combo I liked. It was hard to get three in patterns so I added the Garden Green square. I used a sentiment from Wonderful Thoughts which has a matching die set that cuts right around the words. I'm loving that look!

I wanted the red to pop so I kept that to a minimum. For sparkle I added a few gems and I will cover the butterfly in Wink of Stella when I find mine!

The Spring Mini Catalog is now out and Sale-A-Bration is going on through the end of February. With Sale-A-Bration you can earn FREE Sale-A-Bration products with every $50* you spend! If you spend $100 you will earn TWO free-with-$50 products or one free-with-$100 product!

Floating By

Happy Tuesday! We have a new hostess and a new color challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches. Deborah gave us some bright and cheery colors to work with.

They seemed made for this fun new stamp and punch bundle from Stampin' Up! I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks yellow when I see a submarine (I'm really showing my age here.)

This was super easy to create. I water colored a wash on mixed media paper (I like that much better than watercolor paper as it's smoother). Stamped the fish and sentiment, stamped and punched out the submarine, popped it up on dimensionals and DONE.

This is a cute set that makes fun cards for kids or any ocean lover.
